Top Reasons Why Reptiles Make Great Pets For Kids

Posted on: 25 November 2019

If you're considering getting a pet for your child, a reptile is a great choice for many reasons. This becomes even truer when you compare them to the most common pets people get for kids, which is usually cats or dogs. Below, we will discuss the top reasons why it's a great idea to get a pet reptile for your child.

Lots of Species to Choose From

Once you decide that you want to get your child a reptile for a pet, you can begin your search for the perfect species that suits them best. There are so many different types of reptiles, that you are sure to find one that your child can fall in love with. Whether it be a snake or a gecko, you will have seemingly endless options to choose from.

They're Inexpensive

When you're buying a pet specifically for a child, you don't want it to be too expensive. Owning a reptile is inexpensive compared to owning a cat or a dog. When buying them, all you need is the creature itself, an appropriately-sized enclosure, equipment, and food.

They Stay Contained to a Small Area

Unlike a dog or a cat, which roams around your entire home and/or property, your child's pet reptile will be contained to a small area in its enclosure. This means no accidents on the carpet, no scratches on the couch, and no picking up waste in your backyard.

They're Safe

It's true that not all reptiles are safe for kids to handle, and they can sometimes be aggressive. However, there are some species that tend to be very well behaved, and can even be handled by children. Should one of these docile species get frightened and bite your child, many of them can't do much harm at all. If you have a pet dog or cat, they can inflict some serious damage to your child if they attack. With a reptile, your child can admire even the most dangerous species safely from outside of their enclosure.

They Teach Responsibility

Compared to most other pets, a reptile can become a hands-on responsibility teacher for kids. With pets like cats and dogs, a lot of the responsibility falls on the adults in the home, as they may be too difficult or dangerous for young kids to do. However, with reptiles, kids can often take care of them completely on their own, aside from a few things that still require an adult to handle.
